Visit the Fort Canning Experiment Garden to experience, touch and smell the exotic spices used in Peranakan cuisine, before sampling Peranakan cuisine at a cosy Peranakan shop tucked in the east of Singapore. Then, explore the Joo Chiat and Katong areas, which are known for their colourful charm from their past as a Peranakan enclave.
Lunch:
Enjoy a Peranakan lunch at Baba Chews Bar and Eatery which is a restaurant inspired by our neighbourhood – Katong. The name “Baba Chews” pays homage to Mr. Chew Joo Chiat (1857–1926), a wealthy local Chinese landowner and philanthropist, known as the ‘King of Katong’ for his contributions to the local community. The restaurant sits on the site of the former Joo Chiat Police Station (1928 – 1987), which was granted conservation status by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore for its architectural & heritage value.
Afternoon:

Nyonya kueh are bite-size cakes, sweets and snacks that are a big part of Peranakan cuisine. Nyonya kueh are often colourful and always addictively delicious. There are over a hundred varieties – this post traces their origins and highlights a selection of the most popular ones. |
